Giuliani Flip Flops on Immigration

3 10 2007

In recent weeks, Rudy Guiliani has tried to transform himself into a border-security-obsessed law-and-order conservative in an effort placate his Republican base, and deflect the criticism he ran a “sanctuary city” while he was mayor of New York. Perhaps Guiliani is feeling the heat after rightfully saying that illegal immigration is not a crime, its just a civil violation. But his eagerness to convince voters of his long-time nativism is wrong-headed and will likely impress voters bogus.

Just a few days ago Guiliani criticized New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer’s plan of issuing drivers licenses to New Yorkers regardless of their immigration status. He reportedly called the proposal not just a mistake, but mindless and that raised concerns that it could lead to more fraud. Of course, Guilliani neglected to mention that its better to have licensed drivers on the road than non-licensed ones. Nor did he mention certain protections against fraud such as checking the photo ID against other photos in the database or that there will be a rigorous process of authenticating foreign documents produced by unauthorized immigrants.

Last week, Giuliani won the endorsement of former California Gov. Pete Wilson, an immigration hardliner. Wilson famously supported California’s proposition 187, which barred unauthorized immigrants from accessing public services.

And according to, Rudy Guiliani also paid a visit to Philadelphia’s famous Geno’s Steaks on Monday night. This is the same restaurant that made national headlines last year for posting a sign that read “This is America. When Ordering Please Speak English.”

Given the current political climate its not surprising that that Guiliani would move to the right on immigration. But its still rather dishonest of him to pass himself off as a anti-immigrant just to win votes. Consider the following video TPM produced comparing his stance on immigration during the nineties and his position now as a presidential candidate:
